What Exactly Is a Golf Green Card?

The simplest explanation is that a Golf Green Card is similar to a driving licence for golfers. It is an official certificate confirming that you understand the basics of the game, safety procedures and golf etiquette. Most golf courses in Poland – and many across continental Europe – require it before allowing players onto a full-size golf course. Why? It is not about bureaucracy. A golf ball struck well can travel at speeds exceeding 200 km/h (125 mph). On a golf course, you need to know how to play safely, avoid putting others at risk and keep the game moving at an appropriate pace.

If you think the Golf Green Card was invented by the Scots over a glass of whisky, think again. In the birthplace of golf – the British Isles – and in the United States, most golfers have never even heard of such a thing. There, you simply pay your green fee, walk onto a public golf course and play. If you behave irresponsibly, a course marshal will warn you or ask you to leave. Simple and effective.

The Golf Green Card system (known in Germany as Platzreife) emerged in continental Europe during the second half of the twentieth century. In countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland, golf experienced a huge boom in popularity. Courses became crowded with new players, many of whom knew little about etiquette, damaged course conditions, played too slowly or ignored basic safety rules. Golf associations responded by introducing a simple requirement: before playing independently, golfers had to demonstrate a basic understanding of the game, etiquette and safety. The term “Golf Green Card” became widely used as a symbol of being ready to start playing. In the 1990s, a similar system was adopted in Poland. Even though Polish golf courses were never as crowded as those in Germany, the Golf Green Card quickly became the standard.
