Want to start playing golf? A few Google searches later, you will probably come across something called a Golf Green Card. It may sound formal and complicated, but in reality getting started is much easier than it seems.
The Golf Green Card course is designed for complete beginners. You do not need to know the rules, own any golf clubs or have any previous experience. We start from scratch and work step by step towards getting you ready to play independently on the golf course. What Exactly Is a Golf Green Card?
Put simply, the Golf Green Card is a bit like a driving licence for golfers. It confirms that you know the basics of the game, understand the essential safety rules and know how to behave on the golf course. Most golf courses in Poland require one if you want to play independently on a full-size course.
However, the goal is not simply to pass an exam and get a certificate. The course is designed to prepare you for the moment when you step onto the golf course on your own and know what to do: how to play safely, move around the course, know when it is your turn to play, keep up with the pace of play and handle the basic situations you may encounter during your first round. That is why we start with the fundamentals and introduce each new element gradually.
A Golf Green Card gives you:
Access to golf courses in Poland and many courses across Europe.
The opportunity to enter beginner-friendly golf tournaments.
An official starting handicap (HCP 54), which reflects your playing level and can be
lowered as your scores improve (yes, in golf a lower handicap is better).

Is the Golf Green Card required?
On most golf courses in Poland, the Golf Green Card is required if you want to play independently on a full-size course. It confirms that you understand the basics of safety, etiquette and pace of play.
Is the Golf Green Card exam difficult?
No. The exam is designed to check the basics, not turn you into a tournament golfer. The focus is mainly on safety, basic rules and proper behaviour on the golf course.
Do I need my own equipment?

In practice, the Golf Green Card and handicap are accepted at many golf courses across continental Europe. However, it is always worth checking the requirements of a specific course before booking a round.

Absolutely. The Golf Green Card course is specifically designed for beginners. You do not need to know the rules, own equipment or have any previous sporting experience.
History of the Golf Green Card
If you think the Golf Green Card was invented by the Scots over a glass of whisky, think again. In the birthplace of golf – the British Isles – and in the United States, most golfers have never even heard of such a thing. There, you simply pay your green fee, walk onto a public golf course and play. If you behave irresponsibly, a course marshal will warn you or ask you to leave. Simple and effective.
The Golf Green Card system (known in Germany as Platzreife) emerged in continental Europe during the second half of the twentieth century. In countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland, golf experienced a huge boom in popularity. Courses became crowded with new players, many of whom knew little about etiquette, damaged course conditions, played too slowly or ignored basic safety rules. Golf associations responded by introducing a simple requirement: before playing independently, golfers had to demonstrate a basic understanding of the game, etiquette and safety. The term “Golf Green Card” became widely used as a symbol of being ready to start playing. In the 1990s, a similar system was adopted in Poland. Even though Polish golf courses were never as crowded as those in Germany, the Golf Green Card quickly became the standard.
